Cuba: One of the World’s Great Birdwatching Destinations

Cuba is home to over two dozen bird species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. These include the bee hummingbird, the world’s smallest hummingbird measuring just two inches long, and what has been called the world’s cutest bird, the Cuban tody.

The Cuban birding experience differs from that experienced in the United States in that birders must hire a state guide who will take them into a specific park area. Hotels and other accommodations can set their guests up with local guides without difficulty. These guides know where to find the birds and will follow the lead of birders in providing their desired experience. For example, if photographing birds is the goal, the guide will take guests to the areas that facilitate getting the best shots. For some species, it is necessary to hire gondola drivers to take birders through the Zapata Swamp, where the Zapata sparrow and the Zapata wren cab be viewed.

In addition to the birdwatching opportunities, visitors to Cuban will also be exposed to Cuba’s culture and history along the way. There are ample chances to enjoy the beaches and to see the Bay of Pigs as part of a beach adventure.
