Cuba’s Culture Honored in Major Lazer Documentary Film

Major Lazer’s success is based on the dancehall culture of the Caribbean, with its live dance performances and huge stage presence. The three artists who make up Major Lazer – Diplo from Florida, Walshy Fire of Jamaica, and Jillionaire from Trinidad – have traveled the world, but always kept strong connections to their respective homelands and always emphasized their commitment to their mission of peace. Now there is a new documentary film called “Give Me Future” that pays homage to their Caribbean roots by showing how modern music was able to infiltrate the historically secretive social environment of Cuba. The documentary features the March 2016 show performed in Havana, Cuba. Because of the efforts of United States President Barack Obama to normalize relations with Cuba, Major Lazer was able to headline a show there. The trio didn’t know if anyone in Cuba had even heard their music before and didn’t expect a large turn-out for the free show, which was held at the Tribuna Antiimperialista. Over 400,000 music fans attended, however, and Major Lazer had the chance to display the true meaning of their effort to “make the world smaller by making the party bigger.” The documentary, which focuses on the way young people in Cuba use electronic music as a means of expression, will be shown at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on January 27, 2017.
