Five Must-See Attractions in Cuba

    Old Havana

    Old Havana, or Habana Vieja, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that preserves a portion of Cuban’s history. Take a stroll on its cobbled streets and enjoy the Baroque and Neoclassical architecture of its buildings. Old Havana is the site of extensive renovations at some its major attractions, including the Baroque Catedral de San Cristobal; the restaurant frequented by American writer Ernest Hemingway, Bodeguita del Medio; and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, a military fort. The chief architectural attraction here is the Casa del Conde Jaruco, an 18th-century construction with stained glass windows. The nearby camera obscura on its 115-foot-high tower provides spectacular views of the area.

    2 Varadero

    This popular beach is located on the Peninsula de Hicacos, a region that juts out into the sea off Cuba’s northern coast. A drawbridge connects the peninsula to the mainland. Home to more than 50 hotels, the palm trees and white sand beaches attract visitors from around the globe. Also in Varadero, a nature reserve, two caves, flower gardens, and a small lake with rowboats for rent. The area offers great deep[sea fishing, golf, skydiving, and snorkeling.

    3 The Town of Trinidad

    Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the town of Trinidad offers the feeling of going back in time. The buildings and cobblestone streets reflect its colonial origins, and must of the architecture dates from the 17th to 19th centuries when the town was made rich by the sugar and slave trades. Today, it is popular with visitors, who come to see the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Church and Monastery of St. Francis, and the Museum of Colonial Architecture.

    4 Guardalavaca

    Guardalavaca in Holguin province is a quiet and remote beach location that features lush foliage that offers lots of shade for those wanting to take a break from the tropical sunshine. Popular with divers and snorkelers, there is lots of sea life in the coral reef to be seen by underwater adventurers. A number of day trips take off from here, including trips to the jungle, and tours o the coast and islands. Dolphin encounters are available, as are trips to a recreated Taino village.

    5 Playa Paraíso, Cayo Largo del Sur

    This beach is a stand-out even in the country known for its excellent beach locations. There is its powdery white sand and its baby-blue water, for starters, and its situation along the sheltered western portion of the island is a great place for sun worshippers. The area includes a wide variety of hotels and resorts
