Introduction to Cayo Largo, Cuba

INTRODUCTION

Cayo Largo del Sur is located on the Eastern end of the Cannarreos Archipelago. The natural coral reefs off the island are home to some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful and colorful marine life (like sponges) making the island an ideal place to go snorkeling. But, as with elsewhere in Cuba, it is the beautiful un-spoilt white sandy beaches that make Cayo Largo the attraction that it is to visitors.

HISTORY

Cayo Largo derives its name from the long shape of the island (with over 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) of white sandy beaches to walk along). The history on the island is one of the oldest in Cuba, with pictures and artefacts having been found that date back to the Siboney culture: during the aboriginal period. Columbus landed here as part of his Spanish conquests in 1494 (second expedition). Since then, many a pirate has used the island as their base to try and purge the Caribbean of all its riches. Today the island is just a great getaway place.
